In the shadow of night, cultivated under the Brazilian moonlight, born from oppression, Capoeira’s past is found in seeking for freedom and resistance. Hidden in the Quilombos (communities of escaped slaves) and among the horrors of the Senzalas (slave quarters), African slaves and their descendents developed a martial art laced with spiritual recognition, veiling with music, dance and acrobatics.
Nowadays, just as life changes, so capoeira has changed in order to preserve its nature and continue its existence.
Capoeira is a circle game, a jogo, much as life is. It is a whisper from the past, a memory of suffering, a hope for liberty. Peace is not lazy. Liberty is not quiet. The path to freedom is often achieved by struggles and pain.
Aliki Kirkou Makropoulou (Graduada Rappsa) practices the art of capoeira for 10 years with the group Jacobina Arte, created by Mestre Pitbull in Thessaloniki. In this workshop, she will teach you the essential elements of this art, including fight and dance movements, basic acrobatics and afrobrazilian songs. Are you ready to liberate yourself from the oppression of slavery?
